Requesting engineers
How to request Tulaian, choose the code agent they use, and release them.
An engineer is one unit of work capacity: it works on one story at a time. You request engineers on the Engineers page and then add them to a project.
Choosing the code agent
Each engineer works with one code agent. These are the agents you can choose from:
- Aider (
aider) - Claude Code (
claude) - OpenAI Codex CLI (
codex) - GitHub Copilot CLI (
copilot) - Gemini CLI (
gemini)
An engineer can use Yavaren's own licence for the agent, or your organisation's licence (add it as a Code agent licence connection first). With your own licence, the key stays in your secret store and only the agent receives it.
Getting the most from your engineers
- One engineer, one story at a time. Have as many engineers as stories you want worked on at the same time.
- Put each engineer on a project. An engineer that is not on a project waits.
- Let them pick up work. With automatic pickup on, engineers start approved stories by themselves.
- Release the ones you do not need. You pay for the hours engineers are in your pool (or, on some plans, the hours they work); a released engineer costs nothing and can be added again at any time.
The Engineers page shows how many engineers you have, how many you may add now, how many stories wait for an engineer and how many engineers are free, with a suggestion: one more engineer for each waiting story no free engineer can take, and one for each active project that has none.
Limits, and asking for more
The number of engineers you may run at once depends on your plan or trial. Under Add engineers, choose how many:
- Up to what you may add now, they join your pool at once.
- More than that, Yavaren is asked first. Say what they are for (the team, the project or the deadline): it helps Yavaren approve quickly. Yavaren approves all of them or fewer, or declines saying why; the answer is shown on the Engineers page, and approved engineers join your pool at once. You can withdraw a request Yavaren has not answered.
What it costs. During a free trial or free credit, the hours of the engineers it covers are free. Engineers beyond the trial's or credit's number are charged at your hourly rate from the start, trial or not; the form says so before you add or ask, and the engineer list marks them Charged in the trial. Your statement shows their hours in the first line and, for clarity, on a line of their own.
For the admins of your organisation.
AI usage this month
Engineers › Usage shows, under AI usage this month, the tokens (input and output) the code agents used this calendar month and the cost as reported by the code agents, by agent. A cost appears only where the agent reported one (Claude Code and Gemini CLI do; Aider and Codex print a usage line; GitHub Copilot CLI reports nothing): Yavaren never estimates it. It is not billed separately: your bill stays engineer-hours. The figures appear when your installation asks the agents for their usage.
An admin can set an alert: an amount in US dollars, a number of tokens, or both. The first time this month's reported usage reaches it, your organisation's admins get one e-mail, once a month. The alert only tells: it never stops, slows or blocks work.
Releasing engineers
Admins release an engineer on the Engineers page. An engineer that is in the middle of a story cannot be released until that story is finished. A released engineer is no longer counted from that moment.
